Column in the Barry & District News by Rt Hon Alun Cairns MP
Many people in Barry, including me, are sorry to hear that Silver Star DIY in Barry are closing after decades of service to the community. I visited the Sylvester family and their great team they have at Silver Star at the weekend to thank them for the many years they have spent contributing to our local economy and for providing a number of employment opportunities for local residents.
Small businesses like Silver Star are part of what makes our community special and I am keen to support them and other local businesses wherever I can. As a long opponent of car parking charges, I know that independent traders in Barry are concerned about the impact of proposed parking charges. That's why I am keen to work with our small businesses again to make sure that their voice is heard and that damaging charges are not imposed. I'm particularly concerned about High Street and Holton Road, where we have a number of excellent independent traders who define our unique business offer in Barry, and I will be doing all I can to make the case that they should be protected from car parking charges.
On a different note, I’m excited to announce that I will be running my 8th London Marathon in April this year to raise money for two excellent causes which I will be formally announcing soon. Look out for updates on my social media and website, where there will be a link to my fundraising page, with donations split equally between the two charities.
Finally, I’m sad to report that Tony Bennett, who spent almost six years running my constituency office in Barry, has retired. Tony was a vital part of my team through the years and I know that many of those who dealt with him at my office will be sad to see him go. He will be missed terribly and I want to wish him and his wife the very best for the future.
