The Barry Hookers Crochet and Craft Group have begun handing out cheques to local good causes following the success of their 2017 charity calendar. The group has raised over £1,300 through the calendar, and are distributing £300 cheques to the four good causes they chose in 2016; Marie Curie Holme Towers, Vale Plus, Age Connects, and the Nippers Lifesaving Group.
The project was supported by local businesses and politicians who sponsored the calendar, which was full of fun pictures involving crotched items staged by members of the Barry Hookers.
Fi Rodgers, spokesperson for the group said, "We were lucky enough to obtain sponsorship through the generous donations of local businesses including Coffee Cove, John's Cafe, Jacquie's, Marco's, Hypervalue, Boofy's, Jane Hutt, Alun Cairns, Beachcomber, Coastal Coffee, Whitmore and Jackson, the Vale Motor Company and Fun Harbour. Without these generous donations we would have been unable to get the calendar printed, so we are hugely grateful."
Vale MP Alun Cairns, one of the project’s sponsors said, “The calendar is great fun, with some real creativity involved in creating the scenes for each month. The Barry Hookers is a fantastic organisation to be involved with, and I am very impressed with their fundraising effort on behalf of some very worthy local causes.”
The group meets every Wednesday at Coffee Cove, Barry Island from 1000-1200. Anyone is welcome to join.
