Colcot Primary schoolchildren have been awarded certificates by the Vale of Glamorgan MP Alun Cairns commemorating their visit to the Houses of Parliament in September.
Before handing out the certificates at a recent visit to the Barry primary, Mr Cairns quizzed the children on their parliamentary knowledge and was impressed with the results. The pupils could name all of the Prime Ministers of the last 30 years as well as the Speaker of the House of Commons.
When it was the turn of the schoolchildren to ask questions of Mr Cairns, they demonstrated their knowledge by asking difficult questions about the British constitution and the role of the monarch in Parliament. And aspiring politicians amongst the class even asked Alun Cairns how they might too become MPs.
The Vale MP said, “I was deeply impressed by the amount of information that these very young pupils had retained and understood from their visit to Parliament. Their knowledge far exceeds that of many people much older than they are.
“Last week was local democracy week, making the interest of these youngsters in our democratic processes particularly heartening. Our democracy can only work effectively when people want to understand and engage with it, in this the pupils at Colcot school are an example to us all.”
