This weekend, Llantwit Major welcomed the arrival of the first ever Pride event in the Vale of Glamorgan with residents and businesses from across the community getting involved.
Major Pride was officially opened at St Illtyd Church, Llantwit Major by the Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, Cllr Leighton Rowlands, Reverend Canon Edwin Counsell, Rhodri Ellis Owen and Alun Cairns MP.
Vale MP, Alun Cairns, also played a role in the day as he awarded certificates to businesses that took part in the window display competition, which ran during the build up to the event. The winner of the display competition was Cwtch Café, with a ‘Highly Commended’ award going to Nickleby’s bookstore as they arranged their window with books written by LBGT authors.
Mr Cairns said, “It was a huge honour to be invited to play a role in the very first Major Pride. I thoroughly enjoyed awarding local businesses for their fantastic promotion of the event. Everyone made a huge effort and it was great to see them stepping forward and embracing it. Pride events play an important role in bringing together communities and I’m delighted that it has been such a big success in Llantwit Major.”
He added, “I want to pay tribute to Rhodri for organising the day, he did a fantastic job and deserves a huge amount of credit. Everyone who attended had a great time and that’s down to Rhodri’s hard work.”
