Delighted to hand over a cheque for £1275, adding to the £85,000 I have now raised for local charities by running ten Marathons.
This money for Calon Heart Screening and Defibrillators Wales will help to run screening events and install defibrillators in the local area.
A fantastic charity that I am delighted to have been able to support, thank you to everyone that donated!
Vale MP, Alun Cairns is well known for running in aid of local causes. Last October, he used the London Marathon to raise money for Calon Hearts and Parkinson's UK. Now that the final accounts are complete, he has raised a total of £4,418.51 between both charities.
He selected Calon Hearts, inspired by the Anwar family's response following the tragic death of Maqsood Anwar from Barry, who suffered a heart attack on Sully playing fields in 2021. Parkinson's UK became the chosen charity because a close colleague had been diagnosed with the disease early in life.
Mr Cairns said
"The tragic passing of 44-year-old Maqsood from a heart attack while playing cricket highlights the need for Calon Hearts' valuable work in providing life-saving equipment and training across the local communities. Sadly, not everyone suffering a heart attack has had access to the latest technology. I am also hugely impressed with the research going on in Cardiff to combat and alleviate Parkinson's disease. So I wanted to play my part in supporting my colleague by raising funds for Parkinson's UK."
Sharon Owen from Calon Hearts said
"We are hugely grateful to Alun for raising this money. We aim to get defibrillators to as many communities as possible and it is a privilege to see Howard Provis, who has been a key campaigner in Barry to make defibrillators available."
