Local MP Alun Cairns is calling on residents to think smart about their energy use this autumn, as new British Gas data reveals over 7,500 smart meters have already been installed in homes in the Vale.
The MP is showing his support for the initiative following a smart meter demonstration by local Smart Energy Expert, Owen Evans.
Alun Cairns MP welcomed the news from British Gas that some residents had already had smart meters installed, free of charge, and encouraged other constituents to consider having them to help manage their energy.
Smart meters replace traditional meters and come with a smart energy monitor, showing how much energy is being used and what it is costing, in pounds and pence, in near real-time. Smart meters also mean an end to estimated bills as they automatically send meter readings to the supplier.
Alun Cairns Member of Parliament for Vale of Glamorgan said: “Technology that can help us to keep an eye on energy costs is great news for Vale residents. The cost of energy bills is very often a serious concern during the winter months. However, with Smart Meters offering the ability to accurately monitor a household’s energy use and how much it is costing, bill payers will be able to guarantee that there will be no nasty surprises on their energy bills this winter.”
British Gas Smart Energy Expert, Owen Evans installs smart meters in homes across the area and has been specially trained to help customers better understand their energy use. He commented: “Getting smart meters installed means you can see how much gas and electricity you’re using so you can stop using energy you don’t need to.
“Small changes, like turning the oven off a minute or two early or unplugging mobiles once fully charged, can save energy. Even having a family film night instead of everyone watching different devices could help too.”
As part of the Government’s Smart Meters Bill, all homes and businesses in Britain are being offered smart meters by the end of 2020. To find out more about having smart meters installed for free in your home, visit www.britishgas.co.uk/smart
