MP for the Vale of Glamorgan, Alun Cairns, is calling on the Vale of Glamorgan Council to reconsider the request of residents for a zebra crossing on Lakin Drive, Highlight Park.
Calls for the zebra crossing arose after work was carried out to lower the curb for disabled users of the pavement, however no crossing facility was provided. The primary concerns presented by residents were that the speed of the traffic which travels along Lakin Drive is frequently dangerously fast, which poses a danger especially to the elderly and disabled. Following the initial calls the proposal was not approved, on the grounds that the evidence supplied by a 30 minute survey period did not show any pedestrians attempting to cross Lakin Drive within the vicinity of the medical centre or the community centre.
Mr Cairns said, “Despite the initial rejection, I do not accept that there is no justification for the provision of a pedestrian crossing facility, when so many of my constituents contact me regarding this specific issue. Highlight Park is a densely populated area and safety is paramount.”
Councillor for Dyfan, Leighton Rowlands added, “I was disappointed that the requested zebra crossing was seen as unnecessary. I do not think that a 30 minute survey of the traffic travelling along Lakin Drive is sufficient. I will therefore be organising for a further, more comprehensive survey of the traffic to be taken.”
