MP Opens New Generation of Chip Shop in Barry
Vale MP Alun Cairns helped mark the formal opening of a new generation of fish and chip shops at ‘The Saucy Chip Club’ on Holton Road in Barry. The new style of fish and chip show is the brainchild of Craig O’Shea, the third generation of a Barry family that has been frying in the Vale since the Second World War.
Mr Cairns was invited to celebrate an innovative effort to give the nation’s favourite a makeover for the 21st century - by a Barry business that celebrates a 60 year history.
New ideas and novel variations of traditional fayre include serving in fashionably designer-style, bio-degradable food boxes, using a lighter rape seed oil for cooking, and offering a range of tasty sauces and new dishes.
Proud of its Welsh heritage the new brand will also be offering slow cooked lamb and meats to accompany its traditional menu. The owners aim to use the new branding and styling to provide a platform for to roll-out the new concept across new sites, with the aim of establishing a major new brand in the fish and chip market.
Mr Cairns said: “Although fish and chips is the nation’s favourite, like any business it’s vital it moves with the times. I hope the Saucy Chip Club in Barry will be a source of inspiration for the fish shop of the future as well as showing local entrepreneurial flair and creating local jobs.”
Making a splash is nothing new for Craig’s family. His wife Natalie runs the town’s Splash Swim School which has taught over 10,000 local children, while Craig has shown he can move up a gear for charity fund-raising, pedalling over 300 miles in a Gavin and Stacey themed bike ride between Billericay and Barry to raise money for Alzheimer’s research.
