Vale MP Alun Cairns has undergone training with the Alzheimer’s Society Cymru in order to become a Dementia Friends Champion, ahead of his Briefing Session in Llantwit Major on Friday 31st May.
Through Dementia Friends Champion training, participants learn about dementia and how it affects people. They also learn how to run Dementia Friends Information Sessions, which Alun will be co-delivering with the Alzheimer’s Society this week. At the Session they will talk about practical actions that Dementia Friends can take to help someone with dementia living in our community and they also hope to inspire others to become Dementia Friends and help to create dementia friendly communities across the Vale of Glamorgan.
Mr Cairns said, “Supporting people living with dementia in our community is something that I care passionately about. This year, I ran the London Marathon to raise money for Dementia Revolution and I’m keen to help support communities across the Vale become dementia friendly, which we’ve been working hard to progress in Llantwit Major.”
He added, “I found the Dementia training to be incredibly moving. It leaves a lasting impact and helps to educate about dementia. I’m really pleased that I’ve taken on the Dementia Champion training and I’m looking forward to providing the opportunity for others to get involved.”
The event is being held by Llantwit Major Dementia Friends, following increased interest at inaugural coffee. The Briefing Session will begin at 10am on the Friday 31st May at Bethel Baptist Church. It will focus on how to best support people living with dementia and their carers in our community. Mr Cairns will co-deliver the Briefing this week and will deliver future briefings independently, once he has undertaken further Dementia Champion training.
All are welcome to attend and anyone who is interested should email [email protected] or call 01446 748657 to register their attendance.
