St Nicholas Primary School pupils this week welcomed visitors from European partner schools, including fellow pupils and teachers from Denmark, Germany and Hungary.
The visit was part of the Lego Education scheme in partnership with the Global Learning Programme which sees European primary schools join together in various host countries for a week of joint learning.
Secretary of State for Wales and Vale MP Alun Cairns attended the school during the final day of the visit to learn more about the Lego Education-Global Learning Programme. St Nicholas Prefects raised questions with the Minister regarding the effect that Brexit will have on their European pupil exchange scheme, with Mr Cairns informing them that it is the UK Government’s plan for programmes such as this to remain available to British pupils. Headteacher Miss Evans shared with the MP the importance of the Erasmus + project and how St Nicholas has now become a leading school in the British Council’s Global Learning programme.
Following the visit he said, “It’s wonderful to see such young pupils extending the hand of friendship to children from other countries and cultures. Exchange visits such as these provide invaluable education on the differences and similarities of other nations and are an exciting alternative to classic classroom learning. I wish St Nicholas the best of luck with their trip to partner schools in 2018.”
St Nicholas pupils and teachers are currently arranging a return visit in Spring of next year, where the children will have the opportunity to experience education in other European countries.
