Column in the Barry & District News by Alun Cairns MP:
I would like to begin by thanking everyone in the Vale of Glamorgan for restating their confidence in the Conservative Party and me in last week’s General Election.
If you voted for me, thank you and I will do all I can to live up to your hopes and expectations. If you did not, gaining your confidence will be my priority.
Across the country, it was an overwhelming win for the Conservatives as people from different communities across United Kingdom came together to endorse our positive plan to finally resolve Brexit and move on to the other key issues we face.
The Prime Minister said on Saturday that you are the masters and we are the servants. Nothing could be more appropriate.
I am privileged and humbled to have the opportunity to serve the Vale of Glamorgan, working to deliver on your priorities like getting Brexit done, securing more investment for the NHS and putting more police officers on our streets. The South Wales force have started the recruitment process already and we will see more police on our streets in due course.
Locally, a lot has been achieved over the last decade. This includes Aston Martin establishing a production plant in the Vale, regeneration in Barry and of Barry Island, and superfast broadband being secured for 95% of households.
However, I am determined to build on these successes, and I have a plan to continue to deliver for the Vale of Glamorgan. I want improvements to public transport, with railway upgrades and a bus revolution. I’ll also continue to fight for a fair funding settlement for our local schools, to protect local health services like the Sam Davies Ward and to stop the carving up of our green spaces for further development.
I look forward to working with you to achieve this over the next five years and if there are any matters that I can help you with, please be in touch.
Thank you again. I wish you all a very happy Christmas!
