Alun Cairns MP hosted a Ukrainian support evening for British hosts and Ukrainian families who have settled in the Vale.
Across two meetings, in Llantwit and Barry over 120 people attended to meet and greet other Ukrainian families. The meetings also provided a chance for hosts to get advice on accessing benefits, employment and education for their Ukrainian guests.
At each event, representatives from local GP surgeries, the DWP, the Citizens Advice Bureau and others offered advice and support for Ukrainians settling in the UK.
It was fantastic to bring together Ukrainian families and their British hosts for a meet and great evening last night. It provided a great opportunity for Ukrainian families to build networks and form relationships with their counterparts. I also invited representatives from the CAB and the DWP to offer insightful advice on how to apply for benefits and how to acquire the necessary support available to families settling here.
“It was also really special to finally meet Yuri Noble and his family who have fled Ukraine. Yuri, a Rhoose resident, set off across Europe in a van to pick up his four family members from the Ukrainian-Polish border and bring them to safety in the UK. Yuri’s father pictured, previously lived in Kiev and has found resettling quite difficult, so hopefully by being able to meet other Ukrainians in Barry this evening it will help ease his transition to society here.
I was struck by the courage and bravery of the Ukrainians who I have met at these meetings, but I am also proud of how generous the Vale community has been to welcoming Ukrainian families, it has been really special to see and I hope I have played an important role.’
