Vale MP, Alun Cairns, attended and spoke at a public meeting held by local campaign group Vale Communities for Future Generations (VCFFG) about the proposals for a new relief road through the Ely Valley.
The proposals, which cut through a protected landscape, have generated huge public backlash, with VCFFG campaign group being set up with the sole purpose of challenging it. The group have also organised a petition of complaint to be submitted to the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
During the meeting, Mr Cairns raised concerns that a new road linking to the M4 from this location would cut the Vale in half and risks forming the new boundary between Cardiff and the rural Vale.
Mr Cairns said, “I was grateful for the opportunity to speak with the campaign group and many residents who hold serious concerns about these proposals. I share their concerns and I have submitted substantial objections during the consultation process.”
He continued, “There is a very real danger that a new relief road here will form a new boundary from the Cardiff urban sprawl. In effect, this could give a licence for further development from Culverhouse Cross towards Sycamore Cross. Local residents are not prepared to allow this to happen and I’m glad that they are making a stand against it.”
Alun urged residents to engage with the consultation process, “It’s so important that people engage with the process and make their thoughts and feelings known.”
