Vale MP Secures Halving of Severn Bridge Tolls
Vale MP Alun Cairns has welcomed the news that Severn Bridge tolls will be reduced by half following an announcement by the Chancellor George Osborne. Mr Cairns says the positive impact on residents of the Vale will be noticeable – as many who cross the bridge on a daily basis for work or business purposes. The toll will be reduced from 2018, with the current cost at £6.60, meaning the cost of crossing could be more than halved.
Mr Cairns made the case for reduced fees to support businesses of all sizes and reducing the fixed cost of travel for all. It will be particularly useful for tradesmen and women who will pay a much reduced toll crossing and make contracts on both sides of the border more viable. Employment is rising faster in Wales than any other part of the country and is now at a record high. Small trade vans will also see a huge reduction from the current toll of £13.20.
Vale MP Alun Cairns said: “I am delighted to have been able to help secure a major reduction in tolls for the Severn Bridge. A cut in tolls of around 50% will make a positive difference to commuters and small business owners and haulage firms in the Vale of Glamorgan – many who use the bridge on a daily basis. This announcement will support local business and help sustain the record levels of job growth we are seeing in Barry, the Vale and across South Wales.”
