Eighteen year old Jay Munn is completing his final preparations before the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas later this month.
The young boxer will be representing Wales in the international competition for the first time, which will require him to win four consecutive fights in order to become world champion.
The young boxer won the Welsh Youth Title at 75Kg, and also represented Wales in the three nations championships receiving a bronze, which qualified him for this July’s Youth Commonwealth competition.
Jay Munn is a former Cowbridge Comprehensive School pupil, who has been trained in boxing by his uncle Neil Munn since the beginning of his boxing career.
Speaking of the upcoming competition, Jay said, “I cannot wait to represent my country at the Commonwealth Games. This is my biggest competition to date and I am keen to take on other boxers from around the world.
“I am so grateful to my uncle for the training he has given me over the years in his boxing gym in Penarth. He has taught me the importance of skill and discipline amongst many other invaluable things. Without a doubt I will be thinking of all that he has taught me when I am in the ring.”
Also trained by Neil at Penarth ABC is national champion Emily Griffiths, 15, who won the Welsh female title at youth level at 45Kg.
Vale MP Alun Cairns visited Jay and Emily at the Penarth Amateur Boxing Club gym to wish them luck in their upcoming fights. Mr Cairns said, “I met Jay at the very start of his boxing career, and it was clear then that he had a passion for the sport. I was astounded to see how much he has matured and improved – he is a very concentrated and driven young man who will undoubtedly go to the top of his sport.
"Emily is a fiery no-nonsense boxer who knows her craft so well for someone so young. Her future in the ring is very bright.
"Good luck both, we’re all behind you!”
