The Poundfield shopping precinct in Llantwit Major is in the running to win up to £50,000 in prize money as part of a nationwide search for the Britain’s best high street.
Vale MP Alun Cairns has nominated Llantwit for the Coastal Community Great British High Street award, in recognition of the efforts made by local businesses, led by Ian Hunt of the independent Filco supermarket, to revitalise the area.
Mr Hunt has established ‘pop-up’ shops in the precinct, allowing small business ventures to test the local market before establishing more permanent presences, with great success for local entrepreneurs. The Filco boss has also helped to re-establish the local chamber of trade and has plans to build a new café on the southern end of the precinct next to Boverton Road.
If successful, Llantwit Major, will win a share of the cash prize pot, and dedicated support and mentoring from industry experts which could range from one to one coaching to advice on digital marketing.
The competition is a great way of sharing successful ideas to regenerate high streets and make them vibrant places to shop and socialise.
Mr Hunt of Filco Supermarkets said, “This nomination is great news for Llantwit Major, giving yet more credibility to our town as an investment destination.
“There is growing confidence amongst traders and fingers crossed, our entry in this will be successful.”
Vale MP Alun Cairns, said: “High streets are the most vital part of our communities and make an important contribution to the economy through the billions of pounds they generate and the thousands of jobs they support.
“There’s a renewed buzz on high streets throughout the Vale, particularly in Llantwit thanks to the efforts of local business leaders. The work of everyone who is involved in local trading should be recognised, and hopefully, this competition will see Llantwit’s renewal through innovation rewarded.”
There are seven separate categories in recognition of the diversity of Britain’s high streets: City Centre; London; Town Centre; Market Town; Coastal Community; Village and parade of shops.
The public can support the Llantwit Major’s nomination at www.thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk and if shortlisted will be able to vote for their favourite high street.
