Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, David Davis MP, was unexpectedly spotted making Welsh cakes in a popular Cowbridge Deli last week. Vale MP and Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns was on hand to help with eating the finished batch.
The high-profile cabinet ministers visited the Elephant and Bun to promote small business ahead of Mr Davis’ speech to the Welsh CBI and Small Business Saturday.
The Brexit Secretary is fond of Welsh cakes and, according to Mr Cairns, was a ‘dab-hand on the griddle’.
Television crews turned up to capture the spectacle and it was broadcast on evening news bulletins across the country.
Jack O Farrington, owner of the Elephant and Bun, described the visit as ‘slightly surreal, but great fun’.
He said, “It was slightly surreal to have the Brexit Secretary cooking a batch of our Welsh cakes last week. He had decided that he wanted to make some Welsh cakes while he was in Wales, so Alun Cairns suggested that the Elephant and Bun would be the place to do it.
“Our Welsh cakes have quite a strong local following, and it was great fun to gain another fan of them in the Cabinet.
"We had customers coming in the shop the next day loving the fact they recognised us on the news, and asked if David Davis took any Welsh cakes home with him."
