A warning that an overgrown drainage ditch presents a flood risk to Ham Manor Park came this week from Vale MP, the Rt Hon Alun Cairns.
He has written to Natural Resources Wales to ask it to consider undertaking work to clear the ditch, as well as carrying out planned work on the Boverton Culvert as soon as possible.
He said: “Boverton has been flooded in the recent past with the Waterfall Mews area of Ham Manor Park only narrowly escaping catastrophic flooding on a number of occasions. The over gown drainage ditch which goes on to run underneath the park-home site, sits in woodland adjacent to the Boverton Brook to the east of Ham Manor.
“When the brook bursts its banks, the area surrounding the ditch can become deluged, with a bank of earth holding back the floodwaters.
“This can be breached, and has come close to being breached in recent years.”
Mr Cairns said that if the vital drainage ditch remains obstructed, the Park Homes at Ham Manor could be at risk. He has informed Natural Resources Wales of the elderly population present in the Park Homes and the potential humanitarian consequences of flooding in this area.
He added: “Obstruction of the drainage ditch near Ham Manor Pak has the potential to exacerbate flooding in the area and put people and Park Homes at risk. I have contacted Natural Resources Wales to ask them to look at the situation and take any action they can.”
