Dinas Powys Community Council Chair Margaret Hayley unveiled a plaque on Friday to honour Dinas Powys’ very own Olympic Champion Hannah Mills. Mills, who won gold in the Rio Olympics with sailing partner Saskia Clarke attended the event along with pupils from St Andrews Primary, local villagers and Vale MP Alun Cairns.
Mr Cairns gave a speech to the assembled crowd praising Hannah Mills determination as an inspiration to the children of Dinas Powys and the Vale. As soon as he had finished his remarks, Ms Mills was presented with a bouquet of flowers by the schoolchildren.
Hannah Mills said, "It's quite overwhelming. It is really nice to see everyone come out and support me.
“It's important that youngsters take up any sport because there are so many distractions these days. My dad took the first stomp on the plaque so he's made his mark."
Following the unveiling, the unveiling party took to the Parish Hall for refreshments, giving local people a chance to see Hannah’s gold medal up close and to discuss her exploits.
Vale MP Alun Cairns said, “Hannah Mills is an inspiration to youngsters here in Dinas Powys and across the Vale. I was very glad that so many children from the local primary school were present to see her and learn about her achievement.
“The local community is rightly very proud of Hannah and it was fantastic to see such great support for her at the ceremony.”
