In the fortnight since my last Barry & District column, life as an MP has well and truly recommenced, with the returning of the everyday challenges and highlights that this role brings.
Whilst every week is a long time in politics, this fortnight in particular has proven quite momentous. We have seen the State Opening of Parliament on the 19th June, where Her Majesty The Queen declared her Government’s plan for Britain’s future, which inevitably garnered the attention of the international media.
The Brexit negotiations have also officially begun, with the world’s eye on the UK at this crucial time.
However amongst all of these front-page developments in British politics, events such as the South Wales Armed Forces Day, which I attended on Sunday, really put into perspective the important aspects of life as a local representative. To speak with veterans who served this country, as well as the Royal British Legion, is always humbling, and I am privileged in my capacity as an MP to have the opportunity to listen and learn from these truly inspiring individuals.
With the world quite rightly taking such a keen interest in current British politics, it is vital that all who live in the UK can access their Government and its proceedings, in order to understand the decisions that affect each and every one of us. There are a variety of ways in which political engagement can be maintained; whether this be through meeting with the local MP, or maybe even visiting Parliament itself. Vale of Glamorgan residents have the opportunity in the near future to do both, as I will be hosting a public surgery on the 30th June, and a trip to Parliament on the 7th July.
The surgery is open to all constituents who would like to discuss a personal or public matter with me. It will take place between 12pm – 2pm in Barry Library, where a private room will be available for those with more sensitive matters to raise.
The opportunity to welcome constituents to Parliament is without a doubt one of the most enjoyable highlights of my role as the Member of Parliament for the Vale of Glamorgan. To share with constituents the splendour of the Houses of Parliament is not only a perfect opportunity for an exclusive tour of one of the world’s most iconic government buildings, but is also the perfect occasion to meet and speak directly with constituents.
