A group of young political enthusiasts at Llantwit Major School have been discussing the responsibility of the media and modern news sources in a one-off debate with a cabinet minister.
The students, aged between 13 – 18 and their RE teacher Ms Marged Williams, quizzed local MP and Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns on the very topical issue of ‘fake news’ and the effect which it has had on recent politics.
Pupils asked questions on subjects such as votes for 16 year olds, the country’s leadership, 20 years of devolution and the rising use of social media to report news.
Following the fiery debate, Mr Cairns said, “It was remarkable to see such a spirited group of students with very strong views. It is often assumed that young people have no interest on politics – Llantwit Major students proved that certainly is not the case!
“A wide range of topics were discussed, from very focussed local issues to the national political landscape and the changing face of the media.
“It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to join in their debate!”
