Sunday 5th of August saw the beginning of a brand new event in Barry, with the very first Barry Island 10K run being held. A total of 3,500 runners participated in the form of local running clubs, international contenders and our very own Vale MP and running enthusiast, Alun Cairns, took part.
The competitive run attracted a vast range of people, with excellent athletes such as Dewi Griffiths, finishing in 29 minutes and 48 seconds, and Elsey Davis, finishing in 34 minutes and 37 seconds, producing stand out performances. The enormous participation was met with an equally impressive crowd in support, with people travelling from far and wide. The run displayed Barry’s greatest assets including Whitmore Bay, the Knapp, Romilly Park and Watch House Bay.
Mr Cairns finished the race in under 50 minutes and extended his congratulations to all who were involved in organising and running the event. He said, “I’d like to thank all involved at Run4Wales, the Vale Of Glamorgan Council and everyone who played a role in organising, planning and volunteering.
He added, “Barry Island was buzzing and I was delighted to see local running clubs supporting the event. It was a privilege to run with them. Barry was seen at its best and I have no doubt that the 10k will have a lasting legacy and continue to attract thousands of people.”
