Column in the Barry & District News by Alun Cairns MP:
This week marks two significant opening events in Barry. First is the opening of the newly improved access at Cadoxton Railway Station. Second, is the opening of the Goodsheds - which is a 24 hour, live, work and play destination housing a range of excellent businesses.
The improvements at Cadoxton Station, including the installation of 2 new lifts and stepped access, have been desperately needed for some time and will make a major difference to passengers, particularly those with disabilities and parents with pushchairs.
I was determined to secure the investment to upgrade this station and see the end of the dingy tunnel! This is a part of Barry that has been overlooked for too long and I am focussed on changing that.
With funding provided by the UK Government, I was pleased to show the Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps MP, the improvements at Cadoxton and demonstrate how these projects are making a real difference. We also used the opportunity to discuss other transport priorities in Barry and the Vale.
Yesterday, the Goodsheds at Barry Waterfront opened their doors to what promises to be one of Barry’s most exciting new developments.
This shows that Barry has become the place to invest – bringing a UK first. For some time I have been keen to change peoples thinking about our town. We offer the best opportunities for investment.
I am delighted that the project has been brought together by local developer Simon Baston and I’ve got to say he and his team have done a brilliant job. I recently visited and was really impressed with what it will bring to Barry.
It’s the UK’s first urban high street and includes a great variety of quality businesses, bringing with them more reasons for visitors to be attracted to Barry, an exciting offer on the doorstep of local residents and employment opportunities. To give you an idea of what will be on offer at the Goodsheds, businesses include a florist, a butcher, a baker, restaurants, a rooftop bar, a mix of privately and socially rented residential apartments, serviced apartments, a cinema and a farmers market. It really has it all!
I wish everyone at the Goodsheds the best of luck and I hope that this a success for all of Barry!
